Sony patent to combat piracy by comparing load times.

4.7
A patent describing a "method for validating legitimate media products" attributed to Sony Computer Entertainment surfaced this week. It was originally filed in August 2011, and the patent elaborates on a process by which a piece of media could be detected as legitimate (not pirated) by comparing two load times against a benchmark for the media.

As you can see in the chart above, the patent describes a secondary validation stage to which a serial number and the "user identification information" are checked against "reliable data, such as that sourced from the manufacturer or developer of the media title."
This information could include account names, location, IP addresses, the speed of the user's connection and product license numbers.

The secondary validation would account for load time errors caused by hardware issues, but would also be skipped entirely if the first cycle - the load time benchmark comparisons - checks out.

NaughtyNuts This is going to be bypasssed

Sooner or later, yes.

There are high chances, but we can't ALWAYS be 100% certain of it.

SRG_PuNiSheR Sounds good now but to me people will find a way to make the load times be acceptable. Or possibly even skip the whole validation process.

Of course, it's bound to happen in time. I remember when people couldn't edit the PS3!

He's right, it's all a matter of time.

Woobie Good idea in theory, not sure how well it will work though.

Zwrq This seems easily bypassable though...

Yeah, probably very easily as well.

Well you never know, we are going to have to wait and see.

Woobie What a smart move, really.

They're improving, slowly but surely.

Yea, until Anonymous decides to have fun with them again.

Ah, that was funny.

It will probably happen too.

Probably, let's just hope it doesn't.

Did Anonymous hack them previously??

Yes, they did.

Never knew Anon made fun of this?

How?

That's what I don't get. I don't know much about this stuff though.
