That’s according to tracking site SteamDB (via Gaming on Linux), which lists 14,023 Steam Deck compatible titles.
Of these games, 4,607 have been ‘Verified’ by Valve, meaning they work “great on Steam Deck, right out of the box”, while 9,416 are deemed to be ‘Playable’, meaning they “may require some manual tweaking by the user to play”.
Valve is in the process of reviewing the entire Steam catalogue and is marking each game with one of four ratings designed to show how smooth the experience will be when playing that game on its handheld.
The other two categories games can fall into are ‘Unsupported’, meaning they don’t work on Steam Deck, or ‘Unknown’, meaning they’ve yet to be checked.
Players can visit a Steam Deck Compatibility page which lets them log into their Steam account and see which of their games have been tested so far.
For a game to be Deck Verified by Valve, it needs to meet four tests:
Input – “The title should have full controller support, use appropriate controller input icons, and automatically bring up the on-screen keyboard when needed”
Display – “The game should support the default resolution of Steam Deck (1280×800 or 1280×720), have good default settings, and text should be legible.”
Seamlessness – “The title shouldn’t display any compatibility warnings, and if there’s a launcher it should be navigable with a controller.”
System Support – “If running through Proton, the game and all its middleware should be supported by Proton. This includes anti-cheat support.”
A record 14,535 games were released on Steam in 2023, up roughly 2,000 from the previous year’s count, according to SteamDB. So far this year, 3,160 games have been released on the digital distribution platform.
Steam has a number of promotions planned for early 2024, including its Spring Sale, which launches this week.
