This isn't the first time that Bethesda's latest game has dipped into Mostly Negative. Reviews also fell into this category towards the end of last year, before once again rising to Mixed. It seemed like the reception would stay this way too, after a huge patch made sweeping changes to the visuals, as well as fixing dozens of bugs. However, it seems that wasn't enough for some players, who describe Starfield as "dull", "bare bones", and "stale".
Starfield's overall reviews are still Mixed, but it's likely far from what Bethesda would have expected. The studio is regarded as one of the best in the RPG genre, but for some, Starfield just didn't meet expectations. Many players complained about the space travel, disappointed that much of it takes place in loading screens. Others say there isn't enough to do when you're exploring the galaxy, making exploration useless.
Bethesda infamously started replying to negative reviews on Steam, disagreeing with their assessments. In one case, a Bethesda worker replied, "Some of Starfield's planets are meant to be empty by design - but that's not boring. When astronauts went to the moon, there was nothing there. They certainly weren't bored."
Is it this bad now?
