Nvidia: PS4 partnership not worth the cost

Tony Tamasi, senior executive in charge of content and technology at Nvidia, seemed to suggest that Nvidia did not want to persue negotiations with Sony due to disagreements revolving around costs and royalties.

"I'm sure there was a negotiation that went on," Tamasi told sources, "and we came to the conclusion that we didn't want to do the business at the price those guys were willing to pay".

He also added: "Having been through the original Xbox and PS3, we understand the economics of console development and the tradeoffs."

Sony's reason for choosing AMD to build the PS4's GPU is probably a secret which will stay within the PlayStation executive circle.

It is thought that AMD did win the contract to build GPUs for thes next Xbox, though this information has yet to be confirmed.

Tamasi seemed to suggest that Nvidia is not too discouraged about losing out on a major deal.
"We're building a whole bunch of stuff," he said.

"In the end, you only have so many engineers and so much capability, and if you're going to go off and do chips for Sony or Microsoft, then that's probably a chip that you're not doing for some other portion of your business.

"And at least in the case of Sony and Nvidia, in terms of PS4, AMD has the business and Nvidia doesn't. We'll see how that plays out from a business perspective I guess. It's clearly not a technology thing."

If I was making the PS4, it would be the other way around for me. I wouldn't want to partner up my console with Nvidia. Not very known to me.

I agree with you 100% yay, ever since I made the switch to pc 2 years ago, it was the best decision of my life. AAA games with max settings makes everything so beautiful and runs so smooth

yea like those computers that are ment for gaming is expensive.


But once you have a high end PC you don't have to upgrade it for a long time. If games come out which you can't run all you need is a few new parts and your all set.


I've just built one for the same price the new one is likely to cost. Plus, you can get your games for free, illegally - but you can. Even if you want to buy them, you can gte mental deals where you cann fill up your library of games instead of maybe purchasing 2-3 games for xbox/ps4

And also, you will have built something that can do more than just play games. It's a whole computer.

It actually is, that's why I made the switch to go to PC gaming.

With the new games demanding so near high end parts to play at a decent playable frame rate it is much more expensive than i console you could make a decent computer for a $1000 but this is going to be no where near the price of the Next gen consoles the part where PC gaming is cheap is the games and subscriptions steam has very good cheap deals on games and is a Non subscription service so saying its cheaper straight off the bat is some cases its not
