Balatro’s first major update tweaks difficulty

4.7
LocalThunk, the solo developer of hit poker roguelike Balatro, has released the game’s first major update for testing.

Balatro’s 1.0.1 patch is now available to public testers, the developer announced on Sunday, with a proper release planned for “probably in about a week”.

Among the changes – posted in full below – is the reduction of ‘ante’ scaling – which is essentially the game’s difficulty – in its later difficulty modes, which should essentially make the game slightly easier.

The update also adds a new ‘Perishable’ mechanic for Jokers, which disables cards marked ‘Perishable’ after 5 rounds, and ‘Rental’ Jokers, which gives cards marked ‘Rental’ a $1 upfront cost and then $3 every round.

The update also buffs various Joker cards and tags, which now offer Joker cards for free.

To access the update on Steam, users need to click on the gear icon on the Balatro Steam library entry, then Properties > Betas > Beta Participation and select public_experimental.

Balatro publisher PlayStack recently announced that the game had sold more than one million copies during its first month on sale.
