Title for Unannounced Doom Game Reportedly Revealed

Doom fans may have reason to be excited, as it seems like the title for the next, long-rumored installment in iD Software's seminal FPS franchise has leaked, with the game reportedly set for a reveal in the near future. If this unannounced title ends up being like what these reports suggest, then it could be a major shake-up to the series that many Doom enthusiasts will likely be excited about.

Since the release of Doom Eternal in 2020, iD Software has been hard at work on their next game, but fans have been left in the dark as to what the developer's upcoming title could be. Rumors have circulated over the years that the Zenimax studio might be giving Quake the reboot treatment, just like it did with Doom in 2016. With how Doom Eternal's The Ancient Gods expansions wrapped up the story established in the series' last two games, it would seem plausible for iD Software to work on another franchise for its next project. However, rumors and leaks have piled up in recent months that point towards the developer's next title still being a new Doom game. With the evidence backing these leaks seemingly being more concrete than ever before, a new report sheds light on what this alleged Doom game might be.

According to recent claims made by Insider Gaming, the next installment in the Doom series is reportedly called "Doom: The Dark Ages." The title, which is said to have "been in development for at least four years," allegedly takes place in a "medieval-inspired doom world" and might serve as a prequel of sorts to the reboot duology. Henderson also states that Doom: Year Zero, the new Doom game that leaked in September 2023 during Microsoft's court case with the FTC, was "the codename/placeholder title" for Doom: The Dark Ages. Year Zero's existence in those leaked documents, which dated back to 2020, seems to corroborate the claims that the game has been in the works for quite a while.

As many might expect, given the fact that iD Software is a Microsoft-owned studio now, this upcoming Doom game will reportedly be revealed "during this year's Xbox Games Showcase on June 9." Like with all of Microsoft's other first-party titles, it's likely that the game will be available on day one for Game Pass, but whether it will be exclusive to Xbox or not is currently unknown. Given Microsoft's recent multiplatform push, it's possible that Doom: The Dark Ages could come to PlayStation and/or Nintendo consoles at some point, if not the same day as the Xbox and PC release.

Regardless of Xbox exclusivity or the lack thereof, the prospect of a medieval-era Doom game will likely excite many fans of the series, as it seems like a refreshing take on the beloved first-person shooter franchise. Hopefully, this rumored third installment in the potential reboot trilogy will end up being more well-received than 2004's Doom 3, which certainly ruffled some feathers in the Doom community upon its release.
