Twitch Is Increasing Tier 1 Subscription Prices In The US

Twitch has once again angered its smaller creators by announcing that Tier 1 subscription prices will be increased across various countries next month, including the United States, New Zealand, several European territories, and more.

If you're a big fan of Twitch and have a slew of creators that you like to support, you might be taking a big hit to your wallet next month, as Twitch has announced that the price of a Tier 1 subscription is going up in over 30 regions, including the United States and New Zealand. At the time of writing, it currently costs $4.99 for a Tier 1 subscription on Twitch, but the price will go up to $5.99 starting on July 11. That's a price increase of roughly 20 percent.

In an article accompanying the price increase announcement, Twitch has claimed that it's doing this to "help creators build and grow their communities worldwide," though how a Tier 1 subscription price increase is going to help to accomplish this isn't explained. It's not all that unexpected of a price increase though, as prices in other regions such as the United Kingdom and Canada similarly increased earlier this year.

Of course, with the upcoming price increase, Twitch subscribers are wondering where the extra money is going to actually go. Twitch has explained in a reply to its announcement tweet on Twitter that the revenue share won't be changing as a result of these price increases, with creators receiving 50 to 70 percent depending on their Plus Program tier. That means they'll be technically making more money, though many are pointing out the flaw in Twitch's logic.

Raising the price of Tier 1 subscriptions ultimately means that more people will be canceling them, especially those that support dozens of streamers. One dollar may not seem like a lot, but it will build depending on how many creators a person is supporting, and people have been quick to point out that this change will only damage the platform's smaller creators, which are more at risk of losing subscriptions.

Either way, the changes aren't very popular among Twitch users, which is unsurprising, since nobody likes paying more for the exact same service they were already getting. On Twitch's side, while it officially claims this is to help creators grow, its struggles with finances are very well known, with CEO Dan Clancy admitting the company is losing money and the platform's shuttering in Korea. Twitch wants to make more cash, and this looks like the way it's going to do it.
