Cities: Skylines 2 Making Big Change to Rent System in Next Update

4.3
The Cities: Skylines 2 developers have recently announced that they will change how Rent works in the game to avoid constant complaints from citizens that Rent is too high. Cities: Skylines 2 was released with a mixed reception last year, and the developer Colossal Order has been working hard to improve the experience since then.

The original Cities: Skylines was released in 2015, and it was a hit, being considered one of the best city-builder games of its time. The game sold over 12 million copies and scored an 85 on Metacritic. Its success led to the sequel's creation, which failed to achieve the same praise.

Now, Colossal Order has unveiled a new developer diary revealing more information about Cities: Skylines 2’s next patch, which still does not have an official release date. Among the changes, the devs decided to overhaul how Rent works to prevent gamers from getting constant complaints from citizens that Rent is too high. According to the developers, they have “removed the virtual landlord so a building’s upkeep is now paid equally by all renters,” and changed how Rent is calculated.

The developers have also tweaked the notification parameters of the “High Rent” messages that have annoyed some players. Now, citizens will only complain when their money is too low and they cannot actually pay Rent, which will prompt them to look for cheaper housing options. Overall, it’s a pretty complicated formula, but the expected result is that Rent will no longer be such a huge issue.

The Cities: Skylines 2 Devs Are Still Trying to Fix The Game's Mixed Reception
High rent is far from the only issue that Cities: Skylines 2 suffered since its launch. Unlike its acclaimed predecessor, the game launched with several performance issues for some players, and missing content that the original game already had. This led to Cities: Skylines 2 gaining mixed reviews, and it currently stands at 74 on the critic score of Metacritic, but only a 3.7 user score. The same negative reception can be seen on Steam, where the game currently has only 52% positive reviews.

Earlier this year, Cities: Skylines 2 faced yet another hurdle. The game’s “Beach Properties” DLC was so badly received among the player base that the publisher Paradox Games offered refunds for Cities Skylines 2’s DLC. Hopefully, the upcoming patch will finally fix some of the most glaring issues with the game, and players will finally be able to play the best version of Cities Skylines 2 soon.
