Yesterday evening, a store listing for Mojang Studios' popular sandbox game Minecraft appeared on Steam. While the fake listing was quickly removed from the platform, it stuck around long enough to give the game's community a false sense of hope that the title would soon be hitting Valve's popular storefront.

On the 12th of June at approximately 6:25PM UTC, a new store listing appeared on Steam under the name of 'Minecraft'. The listing included official marketing images for Minecraft, a release date of December 31, 2024, and a description that read, "Explore, build, and survive in a blocky, pixelated world of endless possibilities with Minecraft."

Within a matter of hours, the listing was removed. But that's all it took for people to be fooled into thinking that developer Mojang Studios would be bringing the game to Steam.

Over on SteamDB, which is an unofficial backend database that tracks everything on Steam, the listing has been marked as fake and no longer appears on Valve's storefront. While you won't find it on Steam, you can see all of the changes and updates that were made to the fake app thanks to SteamDB.

Despite only being listed on Steam for a matter of hours, multiple posts began appearing on social media surrounding the possibility of Minecraft coming to Steam. One user took to Reddit shortly after the listing appeared to question its legitimacy, saying, "Me and my friend found this on Steam. It is now taken down so I don't know what happened exactly. Can someone tell me what could possibly be happening?"

The listing was also posted on the 'GamingLeaksAndRumours' subreddit, a popular subreddit for users to share and discuss leaks within the gaming world.

While this listing is most certainly a fake, it should be noted that the Microsoft Store had previously led fans to believe that Minecraft would soon be coming to Steam too. Last month, when a Minecraft user attempted to redeem Minecoins via the Microsoft Store, the page stated that the product required Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC or Steam.

Currently, Minecraft's Bedrock Edition is only available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC via the Microsoft Store, Nintendo Switch, and current-gen consoles via backward compatibility. (Bedrock Edition is also available on a wide variety of other devices, such as Android, iOS, FireTV, and more.)

This isn't the first time that Steam has been hit with a fake game listing either. Earlier this year, multiple listings for Helldivers 2, Palworld, and more appeared on the platform, baiting people into purchasing fake games. It's a problem that continues to persist for Valve, and one that needs to be addressed by the studio.
