While the Mortal Kombat franchise has traditionally been a 2D fighting game series, it has plenty of single-player content. Many of the mainline entries, especially after the ninth mainline game, have had cinematic single-player story modes, alongside the traditional arcade ladders. Not only that, the series has occasionally dipped into making single-player spin-offs, with games like Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. While some Mortal Kombat spin-offs like Mythologies and Special Forces were critically panned, Shaolin Monks was praised for being an excellent blueprint of what the series could do if it was a co-op action beat 'em up. It appears that an action-adventure game like Shaolin Monks could be in consideration.
Posted by thevscooper on Twitter, they said that NetherRealm Studios is reportedly considering an Action-Adventure mode or even a spin-off for one of their titles. The most likely candidate for this rumor is Mortal Kombat, though they note that it could also be used for NetherRealm's Injustice series, too. They note that it is too early to tell if this will pan out as planned, as development plans change frequently, and the pitch could be rejected before it enters development.

Take it cautiously, it's too early but its what I've been hearing
NetherRealm is reportedly exploring an Action-Adventure mode or spin off for one of their titles
Most likely for MK, but Injustice might not be too far behind. We'll see how it all plays out pic.twitter.com/7DPnChqcnZ
This rumor had gotten a lot of fans excited regardless. Many had hoped that NetherRealm could revisit a single-player style of gameplay at some point. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon has teased fans about a possible Shaolin Monks remaster or follow-up in the past, and Boon has also discussed trying to pitch a spin-off to Warner Bros. for several years but getting rejected each time.
Other past single-player Mortal Kombat games that were canceled include Mortal Kombat: Fire and Ice, which would have iterated upon Shaolin Monks' gameplay and starred the iconic Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Some fans are hoping that if this spin-off is real, it will focus on what made Shaolin Monks great, where it translated the series' 2D fighting game mechanics into a full 3D action adventure. For now, fans should take this rumor with a grain of salt until NetherRealm and Warner Bros. provide more official information. In the meantime, both companies are focused on 2023's Mortal Kombat 1, releasing plenty of post-launch DLC cosmetics and characters.
