Friday the 13th is easily one of the most influential horror movie franchises of all time, and one of the oldest, too. It's strange, then, that there haven't been many attempts to bring the series into the realm of video games. To date, there have only been 4 notable Friday the 13th video games over the last 40 or so years. The first one, simply titled Friday the 13th: The Computer Game, was released on 8-bit home computers in 1986. Meanwhile, in 1989, Atlus — of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona fame — released a critically panned title based on the franchise for the NES, in collaboration with the publisher LJN. Several decades later, IllFonic launched an asymmetrical horror game dubbed Friday the 13th: The Game in 2017. This was then followed up by Blue Wizard Digital's Friday the 13th: Killer Puzzle, which was released in 2018.
As one can clearly tell, Jason Voorhees hasn't exactly had a strong track record in the video game medium. However, the serial killer may soon have more opportunities to turn his fortunes around as, according to a recent tweet from the insider CineStealth, there are apparently two Friday the 13th games in development. One of the projects is reportedly multiplayer, while the other "features more linear gameplay." While CineStealth doesn't outright say that the latter of the two titles is a single-player game, their wording does seem to suggest this. If so, then a linear Friday the 13th experience in the vein of games like Resident Evil or Alien: Isolation could be interesting.
#Fridaythe13th #Jason rumors:
— CineStealth 🔍 (@cinestealth) June 26, 2024
- Jason is coming to Fortnite next season. Collab will allegedly feature NO reference to the F13 brand (I find this interesting)
- TWO new Friday the 13th games in stages of development. One is multiplayer, the other features more linear gameplay.
In addition to the claim they made about these rumored Friday the 13th games, CineStealth also alleges that Jason Voorhees is coming to Fortnite next season. They state, however, that the collaboration won't feature any reference to the Friday the 13th brand. If true, this could possibly be because of licensing issues surrounding the IP. Either way, this rumor does seem to corroborate recent speculation that the franchise could cross over with Fortnite soon, courtesy of an official Friday the 13th Twitter account called Jason Universe following Epic Games' hit battle royale on the social media site.
For the record, these rumors don't seem too far-fetched, as Horror Inc. — the co-owners of the Friday the 13th IP — announced in May 2024 that it would begin a multiplatform expansion of the classic slasher franchise, which will involve video games in some way. It looks like Friday the 13th fans may find out sooner or later what this could entail.
