Sonic X Shadow Generations Has An Unexpected Legacy Skin

4.2
Sonic X Shadow Generations has confirmed another legacy skin for the game, with this skin being an unexpected reference to Sonic Jam. Sonic X Shadow Generations has been generating a lot of buzz around the Sonic fandom in the past year, not only for being a remaster of the original game, but also for having a separate story campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow's presence in the game has been the most widely talked about part of this updated re-release, as one of the character's most personal enemies, Black Doom, has somehow made a return after his first and only appearance in Shadow's spin-off game.

The biggest thing that Sonic X Shadow Generations focuses on is the nostalgia regarding the franchise's long and winding history. The original game previously remixed a variety of classic and modern stages from past games into one adventure, making them fit the gameplay of either a 2D platformer like the Genesis games or a high-speed 3D action stage similar to Sonic Colors or Unleashed. Sonic X Shadow Generations capitalizes on this nostalgia further by adding legacy skins, with one for Modern Sonic being based on his appearance in the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure, and Shadow getting a skin based on Terios, which is one of Shadow's earliest designs. Sonic X Shadow Generations is also giving a costume to Classic Sonic, with this one being based on Sonic Jam.

Sega recently updated the official Sonic X Shadow Generations website with a section to sign up for Sega's email newsletter. Fans who sign up for this newsletter before November 1 will receive a special low poly 3D skin for Classic Sonic, which is directly inspired by the character's first 3D appearance in Sonic Jam. This skin is appropriately blocky, making it a call-back and deep-cut reference to an obscure Sega Saturn game.

There was an attempt to create a Sonic game for the ill-fated Sega Saturn, but its failure resulted in the game moving to the Dreamcast, which resulted in Sonic Adventure as it is known today. However, this was reworked into Sonic Jam, which was an interactive 3D hub that players could run through as Sonic in order to play one of the re-released Genesis titles, along with other features found in a small 3D environment.

Many fans appreciated the deep-cut reference to Sonic Jam, as it was a relatively obscure game that most fans wouldn't know about. Other fans commented on how cute Classic Sonic looked in the retro 3D low poly style. While most of the attention has been given to Shadow Generations and its new content, this remaster appears to be pulling from all corners to make it a truly nostalgic run through Sonic's history.
