The First Descendant Is Being Accused Of Copying Destiny 2 Icons

4.3
The First Descendant is a new live service game from Korean studio Nexon, which officially arrived on PS5 and PS4 on July 2, 2024.

It’s not entirely flopped, though it’s not taken the world by storm the way other live service games released this year have. It’s been no Palworld, to say the least – but it ain’t Suicide Squad either.

However a new report from Forbes published on Sunday doesn’t look like it’ll do The First Descendant any favours, as the game is being accused of copying icons from Destiny 2.

More than just icons, it’s being accused of ripping weapon designs from Bungie’s mega-hit, but the icons remain the most damning of the accusations, as some of them are basically exact copies with very little, if anything, being changed.

You can see some of the prime examples clearly in this image here, made by Forbes for its report:

There’s been no word from Bungie or Nexon about the accusations, though players are finding more icons that seem to be blatantly copied. The original report from Forbes has already been updated to include two more icons that look to be copies of each other.

As the report points out though, it’s up to Bungie to do anything about this, if it wants to investigate the alleged plagiarism. The First Descendant is already clearly inspired by Destiny 2 in many aesthetic ways, even if it plays more like Warframe.

It’s likely that this could just dissolve as an issue if Bungie choose not to follow-up. But then there’s also the possibility that Bungie investigates further, and Nexon is caught (for a third time) using unsavoury practices, to say the least.

Twice now, Nexon has been fined for lying to its player base and manipulating the drop odds of desirable in-game items that made them nearly (and in some cases, actually) impossible to acquire. Imagine spending more and more on a premium currency for an item you quite literally have no chance at getting, then imagine that happening to thousands of players

It did this with MapleStory and Sudden Attack, so it’s not a huge leap to consider Nexon would shortcut design elements like icons if it’s willing to lie to its player base for profit.

But for now the allegations around the copying of icons are just that, and it would be an uphill battle for Bungie to try and legally prove any wrongdoing.
