Nolan Bushnell, known in the gaming community as the man who founded Atari, had some interesting words to say about Microsoft’s next-generation console, and how it can possibly outsell Sony’s recently announced PlayStation 4.

“I personally believe Microsoft is in a superior position, and the reason is Sony, whenever they change consoles, the software tools that they have are lame,” said Bushnell in a recent interview with Game Trailers about the chances of the Xbox 720/Xbox Next/Next Xbox. “A lot of people do not realize how strong the software community is at making the hardware platform sing and dance,” the Atari founder added.

Despite Sony’s efforts to make the PS4 a more developer-centric console with its hardware, as well as developer tools, there are several experts who believe that isn't enough for Sony to outdo Microsoft and its so-called “Xbox 720”, which is known internally as Durango.


Aside from Microsoft having superior developer tools, Bushnell believes another variable that could work in Microsoft’s favor is its financial kitty. Microsoft’s superior budget, said Bushnell, could help the Redmond company “defend” its capability of manufacturing “much better products sooner and easier” with the aid of its “strong software tools.”

Nonetheless, gaming industry and technology specialists are still confident in Sony’s potential to improve graphical quality drastically based on confirmed specifications thus far. They also believe that the chasm between Microsoft and Sony in terms of compatible video game titles wouldn't be that significant at first, but could potentially become much larger over time, eventually determining which company’s console outsells the other at the end of the day.
