Crooks was quickly killed, and in the aftermath of the shooting, investigators have been trying to figure out a motive. Crooks was a registered Republican, but previously made a donation to the Progressive Turnout Project, making Crooks' exact political affiliations unknown. Crooks seemingly did not leave behind a manifesto explaining why he wanted to kill Donald Trump. The investigation continues at the time of this writing, but it's unclear if more information about Crooks' potential motive will come to light or not.
In the meantime, a Fox News report has claimed that US senators were told that Crooks left a message on Steam reading: "July 13 will be my premiere, watch as it unfolds." The Fox News report did not provide clarification on where exactly this message was left on Steam. Steam is primarily meant as a digital distribution platform for digital PC games, but it has various communication features as well.
Steam games have special community sections that act as forums for users to discuss the game. Steam users are also able to leave reviews for games, and the reviews themselves are not always exactly relevant to the actual quality of said game. Review bombing efforts have long been a problem on Steam, with users using the platform to express their distaste for something involving the game that is usually unrelated to how good the game actually is. Without further context for Crooks' message, it's unclear if it was left in a game review, in a forum post, or somewhere else. Crooks' Steam profile has yet to be disclosed to the public.
