Twitch has unbanned former President Donald Trump after three years, five months, and four weeks. With Twitch and livestreaming in general skyrocketing in popularity this last decade, it was only a matter of time before politicians got in on the action. Various politicians have utilized Twitch to campaign and rally their base, and that includes Donald Trump.

Donald Trump's Twitch channel was created in 2019. Trump's Twitch channel wasn't used to play video games or to have Trump respond to questions in chat, but rather, it was mainly used to stream the former president's rallies. In June 2020, Twitch suspended Donald Trump's Twitch account for hateful conduct, due to unspecified things that were said during his rallies. That first Trump Twitch ban only lasted a couple of weeks, with his account restored in July 2020.

Then, in the wake of the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, Donald Trump's Twitch account was hit with yet another ban. At the time, Twitch confirmed that the Donald Trump ban was "indefinite," stating that it made the decision due to "potential for harm to our community and the general public." Now, three years, five months, and four weeks later, Twitch has officially unbanned Donald Trump. No reason for why Donald Trump's Twitch account has been unbanned has been revealed at the time of this writing.

It's also unclear if Donald Trump or his campaign will even utilize Twitch this go-around. A quick visit to the now-restored Donald Trump Twitch channel shows links to Trump's 2020 campaign, when his running mate was Mike Pence and not JD Vance. Nothing has been streamed on the channel since the unbanning, but if the Trump campaign does decide to use Twitch, one has to imagine that it will be to stream the former president's rallies again. Trump rallies are expected to continue in the months leading up to the 2024 election, which will take place on November 5.

Other politicians have utilized Twitch and livestreaming in other ways. For example, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez famously streamed Among Us with popular streamers to encourage young people to go out and vote during the 2020 election. In another instance, Bernie Sanders hosted a Twitch livestream, though he didn't play video games.
