A Halo 5 fan has discovered that part of a battle rifle can be seen in front of Spartan Locke’s armor in the box art for the game. While something like a weapon in front of a character would seem obvious, especially when it is on the game’s cover art, many Halo 5 players were surprised by this discovery.

Halo 5 was released in 2015 for the Xbox One, standing as the only new mainline Halo game on the system. While the game faced a variety of criticism, such as for its campaign, some enjoyed its multiplayer, which featured more dynamic movement with the inclusion of a Thruster Pack, Ground Pound, and Charge abilities. In addition, the game featured a large cast of characters, including Spartan Locke, the leader of Fireteam Osiris. Locke, along with the Master Chief, was one of the two primary protagonists in Halo 5’s campaign, and he featured in the game’s promotional material, such as the box art.

Recently, a gamer known as AftermaThXCVII on the Halo subreddit highlighted a surprising detail about the box art for Halo 5. Specifically, the player discovered that part of a battle rifle, one of the game’s weapons, was featured in front of Halo 5's Spartan Locke in the artwork. According to the Reddit user, the cropped battle rifle partially covered Locke’s chest armor. AftermaThXCVII included a picture of the Halo 5 gun, the BR85 SR, to help back up their discovery. Surprisingly, the weapon’s stock appeared to match the one seen in the box art, including its insignia.

While it might seem unlikely for a gun in the foreground of a game’s box art to go unnoticed by many for nearly 9 years, that appears to be what has happened. On Reddit, numerous surprised gamers upvoted the post, with comments saying they had never noticed the cropped gun before. Many fans believe that Locke was originally holding the Halo weapon before the image was edited for the box art.

One of the reasons why the cropped battle rifle went unnoticed by so many gamers is likely the shadows cast on Locke’s dark-colored armor. The image’s dark composition and the many details on the character’s armor make it difficult to see where one piece begins and another ends without closer inspection.
