Since the launch of the Xbox Series X/S, Microsoft has released a bunch of different limited-edition controllers. Although most gamers are set with just one or two controllers, there are some who collect them as a hobby. Some of these controllers are even based on recent game releases, making them even more exclusive. A short while back, Final Fantasy 14 shared pictomancer and viper-themed controllers, which shows how awesome these limited edition releases can be. As with anything collectible, those who purchase these controllers want to display them in unique ways, which is where this latest Xbox controller change comes in.
A user on Reddit named Dresko90 is an ardent collector of Xbox controllers. They have an awesome display of many of the recent releases, which are sorted by color. It's undoubtedly satisfying to look at, but after ordering the new translucent Blue Sky Cipher Edition Xbox Wireless Controller, it isn't quite the same. Not only has Xbox reduced the size of the packaging, but it has also removed the image of the controller from the side of the box with its latest release. This would be fine for new collectors, but for those with previous controllers, it doesn't fit among the others at all.
Why did you change the packaging ? ðŸ˜

Another player in the thread shared their frustration, pointing out that "all of these variants are aimed at collectors," which is a valid point. While some players will get a variant Xbox controller by chance when purchasing the console for the first time, there is definitely an argument that the core audience for them is the collectors, who are the people most affected by this change. However, not everyone was entirely sympathetic to Dresko90's cause, with some pointing out that the smaller packaging makes it easier and cheaper to ship the controller on Microsoft's end.
Hopefully, Dresko90 will be able to find an adequate solution for their impressive Xbox collection, as it would be a shame to see it ruined by the change. Going forward, Xbox will surely release even more variants of the Series X/S controller, and it'll be interesting to see if it will stick with its new packaging change or revert to the old design.
