Mafia: The Old Country Reveal Promises A New Sicilian Epic

Mafia: The Old Country was revealed at Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live and it's set to arrive in 2025. The new entry in the Mafia franchise will delve into the origins of organized crime and depict the brutal and criminal underworlds of Sicily in the 1900s.

Mafia: The Old Country will be the fourth mainline entry in the Mafia franchise. Coming from the developer Hangar 13, Mafia: The Old Country was arguably the biggest surprise of Gamescom's Opening Night Live, as it marks the return of the acclaimed franchise eight years after the last installment, Mafia 3.

The in-game engine cinematic shown at Gamescom 2024 showcases a series of images from what seems to be a mansion belonging to a wealthy family, quite possibly one with criminal operations.

Although it's a brief teaser, it does set the tone right for the upcoming game, which will offer a ''deep, linear narrative with that classic mob movie feeling,'' according to Nick Baynes, the President of Hangar 13.

Mafia: The Definitive Edition also aimed to create a linear narrative while reimagining the 2002 classic. The series' arguably the best game, Mafia 2, and its follow-up, Mafia 3, were open-world games depicting criminal underworlds of the 1950s and 1960s.

They also embraced a more linear gameplay formula, where players complete main story missions to progress the narrative.

This focused approach set the Mafia games apart from many other sandbox or open-world titles. It worked well even for the unpopular Mafia 3, which was a departure from the first two games in terms of theme and setting.

It seems like Mafia: The Old Country will have the same formula as its predecessors, according to Baynes, who believes that their forthcoming title will provide fans of the franchise with what they love.

Set in Sicily, the game allows players to explore the origins of organized crime while attempting to survive a brutal era.

In 2022, a series of Mafia 4 leaks mentioned that the game would be set in Sicily and its story would revolve around Don Salieri, one of the bad guys in the first game.

The setting in Sicily appears to have been confirmed, but it's still uncertain whether the other information is accurate.

It's also worth noting that Hangar 13 plans to share more details from Mafia: The Old Country in December 2024. Although the exact release date has yet to be announced, it seems like we'll see more of Sicily in the 1900s before this year concludes.

If the in-engine cinematic trailer got your interest, Mafia: The Definitive Edition landed on Xbox Game Pass last week. It's a brilliant remake that revisits the original Mafia game that kicked off the franchise.
