Fortnite Player Is Somehow Tens of Thousands of V-Bucks in Debt

0
A Fortnite player somehow managed to attain tens of thousands of V-bucks of debt on their profile, leading players to speculate on how they got it in the first place, given how the item shop economy typically works. Theories abounded that included rumors of a bug with the Fortnite item shop, but many players seem to believe the debt was the result of the player's own actions rather than a technical error.

The item shop in Fortnite is one of its biggest draws, as it offers a constant stream of player skins and cosmetics available for purchase with its in-game currency, V-bucks, which players can purchase with real money or earn by completing the battle pass. Developer Epic Games eventually added a method to cancel and refund purchases with V-bucks to prevent accidental transactions, which some suspect may be at fault for the player's in-game debt.

Reddit user ForwardTraining1482 shared an image to the official Fortnite subreddit showcasing their in-game profile and specifically their V-bucks, which shows a balance of -33,150, somehow putting them in major debt. The user expressed shock towards their profile, as Epic never made it clear that players could enter debt on their V-bucks balance, but others seem to suspect it may be the result of an attempt to get free cosmetic items from the Fortnite item shop.

Fans in the comments were also surprised that such a thing could occur, but many seemed to suspect that the player may have requested a refund for purchasing a bunch of V-bucks after using them to buy items. This method is seemingly common, leading Epic to put systems in place to dissuade players from trying it, including removing purchased items from their accounts after the refund and sometimes even putting the player in debt, which appears to be the case here.

Of course, there is no way to confirm whether this speculation holds merit, but considering the game is clearly able to display V-bucks balances in the negatives, it appears to be an intentional feature. Epic has made significant changes to the Fortnite item shop in recent years, however, so it may not be a longshot to suspect that it has installed such an element to deter potential fraudsters.

In any case, the latest Fortnite season has a lot of new cosmetics on offer, like the newly-released Iron Spider Spider-Man skin, and buying all of them would cost thousands of V-bucks, so it may be of little shock to see players attempt to lessen the costs. Still, players can earn V-bucks from leveling up on the battle pass or a recurring Fortnite Crew membership as well, so there are a few ways to earn them without outright purchasing any.
