When Helldivers 2 surprised pretty much everyone all the way back in February and became one of PlayStation's biggest games ever, it seemed like it could do no wrong. That was quickly proven to not be the case, though, as the infamous PSN login requirement debacle in May showed that fans were going to be incredibly vocal when they weren't happy about the state of the game.
Although Arrowhead did quickly fix that requirement and looked to be getting things back on track, the past few weeks have been incredibly rough for Helldivers 2. Most of the issues stem from the Escalation of Freedom update, which massively nerfed the Flamethrower and indicated to most players that balance and a consistent meta was more important than fun.
Escalation of Freedom was so rough for Helldivers 2 that Arrowhead released a statement where it admitted that the update "didn't hit the target", something that was going to be fixed within 60 days. It's not been all that long since that statement was made by Arrowhead, but it seems that players aren't willing to wait.
Over on the game's Steam page, Helldivers 2 currently sits with "Mostly Negative" recent reviews, of which there are currently more than 12,000. The comments on those reviews outline some of the issues that fans have with the game currently, including that there's "no fun allowed", "too many nerfs", and that there shouldn't be so many balance changes in a non-PvE game.
It doesn't seem like there's been any big inciting event since the flamethrower was nerfed as part of the Escalation of Freedom update, but it seems that a lot of Helldivers 2 players are just a bit sick of waiting for changes to be made and are making their annoyance heard once again on Steam.
Arrowhead has yet to reveal much more about the changes that it plans on making to Helldivers 2, but considering how quickly it's dropped back down to "Mostly Negative", it's going to have to do something pretty big to win players back. Let's hope that Helldivers 2 can get another redemption arc in 2024.
