One of the main things that separates Star Wars Outlaws from other recent games in the franchise is that it has you playing as a Force-less scoundrel instead of a lightsaber-wielding Jedi like Cal Kestis. It shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that Kay Vess is much less of a powerhouse and has to rely on her wits and cunning to get out of sticky situations.
While it was obvious from the get-go that Outlaws would be offering a different kind of Star Wars experience, a lot of players weren't expecting stealth to be such a big part of the main gameplay loop. That wouldn't be such a problem if it wasn't for the brutal insta-fail sections that are littered throughout the first few hours of Outlaws and punish players before they've even learned the ropes.
Since Star Wars Outlaws' launch last week, players have been making it clear that they aren't particularly happy with how unfair the stealth mechanics can feel in the early hours of the game, especially when the "Don't get caught" objective pops up. It seems that Massive is aware of the feedback, as Outlaws' creative director, Julian Gerighty, confirmed in an interview with GamesRadar that they're going to be changed.
When asked about the insta-fail stealth missions, Gerighty pointed out that most fans are struggling with a mission on Mirogana that's "incredibly punishing" and admitted that it was a "mistake" and something that the team is going to work on improving. Gerighty says that he doesn't think the fail state is going to be removed completely, but that there are tweaks that can be made to make it more "enjoyable".
We just don't want it to feel unfair. And today, I think it feels unfair. And believe it or not, this wasn't our intention. This is more of something that crept in in the last week or so, and that we're correcting already for a patch that's coming out maybe in 10 days. - Julian Gerighty
It's not just players that think the stealth sections are strangely brutal, as Gerighty also admitted in the interview that they currently feel "unfair", something that Massive didn't intend to happen. It seems that won't be the case for long, however, as the creative director also confirmed that a patch is coming in "maybe 10 days" that aims to tweak the current systems and make them less punishing.
While the early-game stealth sections do feel a little too tough right now, it's worth noting that Outlaws does eventually open up a lot more and provide Kay and Nix with more options to level the playing field. It's a shame that a lot of players have been put off by the opening sections, but hopefully they return when things are a bit easier.
