PS5 Pro Announcement Has Caused Huge Boost To PS5 Disc Drive Sales

0
The PS5 Pro is the hottest topic in the gaming world right now and has been for the last 24 hours.

Sony revealed the console yesterday and began its presentation by discussing the technical details of the mid-generational refresh. Things quickly went downhill, however, as the company revealed the eye-watering $700/£700 price and announced the console doesn't include a disc drive.

But while many people were quick to lambast the console manufacturer for its out-of-touch pricing, this has not stopped a flood of prospective owners from purchasing the console's disc drive add-on.

As reported by Push Square, sales of Sony's $80 detachable disc drive have significantly increased over the last 24 hours since the Pro's announcement.

The peripheral has entered the gaming sales charts on sites like Amazon, where it currently sits as the eighth best-selling video game product, outselling things like the DualSense controller, the Meta Quest 3, and both the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

While the $700 price point left fans furious, the PS5 Pro is still expected to sell to the levels of its PS4 counterpart, which eventually sold around 15 million units. This relatively high number has meant fans are likely getting ahead of any rush, securing their detachable disc drive early and avoiding any potential sellouts further down the line. Given that the original PS5 was so hard to get at launch, this might be a wise decision.

We at TheGamer were left scratching our heads at the $700 price, so we decided to figure out what else you could buy with that kind of money. If you have that amount of cash lying about, you could grab yourself 54 copies of Balatro, two PlayStation 5s, or potentially two years worth of groceries!
