Rumor: PlayStation State of Play Planned for Late September

4.3
PlayStation's next State of Play event is taking place in late September 2024, a well-known industry insider has said. The purported PlayStation broadcast might be at least partially dedicated to showcasing games running on the recently unveiled PS5 Pro.

Sony has been hosting State of Play events multiple times per year for over half a decade. The latest of these livestreams was the May 30 State of Play, which featured Astro Bot, Marvel Rivals, Silent Hill 2, Monster Hunter Wilds, and the ill-fated Concord, among numerous other titles.

Sony is now looking to follow up on that event before the end of the month, according to well-known industry insider Jeff Grubb. During the latest episode of the Game Mess Mornings podcast, Grubb reiterated his recent claim that Sony is planning a State of Play for September 2024. He has now also narrowed down the time frame for the event by stating that the livestream is "probably coming in, let's say twelve-ish days," i.e., on or around September 24.

The exact game lineup for the purported event is currently unclear, although there are some obvious candidates. E.g., given the massive success of Astro Bot, it is quite plausible that Team Asobi's latest title will reveal at least some of its post-launch content during the next State of Play. After all, the developer did recently confirm that free Astro Bot DLC will be coming soon after the game itself hits the market. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater could also make an appearance at the upcoming event, not least because Sony has repeatedly insisted that the much-anticipated remake will release in 2024, even though Konami itself hasn't yet committed to a firm release window, much less a release date.

In a broader context, the notion of a September 2024 State of Play aligns with Sony's historical practices; since 2019, the Japanese gaming giant has consistently held product showcases in September, so it now has an opportunity to continue this tradition for the fifth year in a row.

Sony's Next Event Will Likely Feature New PS5 Pro Gameplay Footage
Whenever it happens, Sony's next broadcast is likely to be at least partially focused on the recently unveiled PlayStation 5 Pro. That's in part because the online reactions to the console's September 10 announcement haven't been particularly positive, largely due to its massive $700 price tag, as well as the fact that both its vertical stand and disc drive will be sold separately. Given that response, Sony will plausibly be motivated to showcase more of the console's capabilities during its next State of Play, aiming to strengthen its case for why fans should consider purchasing it.
