Sony has officially announced Gran Turismo 6 for PS3.

According to a leaked press release obtained by iAfrica, the game will be released this holiday season.
CVG understands the leaked press release is genuine and that the game will officially be revealed later today.

According to the release, the game will feature all of the cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 5, with fresh historic, road and race vehicles bringing the total car count to 1200 at launch. Thousands of custom wheels and aerodynamic parts will be available.

The UK's Silverstone Circuit will appear in the game for the first time in the series' history. It will be one of seven new locations, taking the total to 33, with 71 different layouts available, 19 of them new. Fresh cars and tracks will be made available as post release DLC.

Social and community features for the game will be supported on smartphones and tablets.

Today's press release states: "GT6 for PlayStation 3 will bring new levels of authenticity to 'the Real Driving Simulator' as well as introducing stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface.

"A new compact game engine will improve operation and increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content."

Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi says: "It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo. Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform."

Gran Turismo 6 development was confirmed in 2010 when Yamauchi talked openly about the project in an interview
