Atomfall Releases First Gameplay Video

Rebellion, of Sniper Elite fame, has dropped a major development update for Atomfall.

The video is not particularly long, but it is packed with information that fictional nuclear disaster enjoyers will love.

While the Fallout and Metro franchises depict a grim future ravaged by a nuclear war between great powers, Atomfall follows the footsteps of STALKER. This time, you trade the modern day for the early 1960s, and the Chernobyl disaster for Windscale.

In 1957, the area was the site of one of the worst nuclear disasters on record when a fire broke out in the reactor core. Unlike Chernobyl, the area around Windrush was never evacuated.

The game is set in 1962, in a universe where the area was quarantined in the aftermath of the disaster.

Atomfall throws you into this quaint radioactive hell with a simple goal: uncover the truth about the disaster. What starts as a routine investigative mission is bound to spiral out of control, as the quarantine area hides many dark secrets.

In the wake of the disaster, the British Army dispatched a unit to uphold law and order in the quarantine zone until the government could launch a full response.

The so-called Protocol Force has been sitting in the area for five years with no external help, and the line between emergency responders and being an occupying army is ever blurrier.

Legitimate or not, the Protocol troops are the only real information channel the citizens in the quarantine zone have.

Their equipment broadly aligns with British Army post-war gear, except for the intimidating atompunk robot enforcers that flaunt machine guns and flamethrowers about.

These tough little guys are in charge of protecting the British Atomic Research Division (B.A.R.D., for short) facilities, whose bunkers will be Atomfall's dungeon equivalent. Expect missions, good loot, and high risk in these areas.

Like in STALKER, the underground facilities around the powerplant were used to conduct less ethical research, which has spawned glowing blue humanoid mutants, among other things.

This blue light also found worshippers outside of the laboratory walls, with several cults spawning in its wake. They would have gotten along well with Escape From Tarkov's blue-light-worshipping hooded cultists.

The character design for the cultists is a great tribute to mid-century England, with the bad guys sporting a mix of fancy hats, and robes, and partaking in national pastimes such as cricket, except with your head as the ball.

Rebellion has shown some sequences that involve stealth, but it does not seem this will be a requirement. You can get around cultists or robots to avoid a firefight, but Atomfall will also let you go in guns blazing.

The survival mechanics in Atomfall look like shooter classics. The video shows a looting and fighting system that looks closer to Metro Exodus, where guns and ammunition can be found in the wild but are in short supply.

You can use more sporting weapons like a cricket bat or a bow and arrow to get around the bullet shortage.

The weapons available to the player are typical British Army post-war gear, like the iconic side-loading STEN submachine gun, and the SLR battle rifle (a British version of the FN FAL).

Based on the trailer and information previously released, Atomfall does not try to reinvent the wheel.

The game borrows classic mechanics and tropes from other apocalyptic survival shooters and mixes them up in a way that refreshes the genre.

Yes, Fallout 4 players have Fallout London, but the forced Cockney aura there was a little hamfisted, it is still a mod for a game that is showing its age.

Atomfall is coming out next year for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X|S, and PC, so you have time to patch up that old hazmat suit.
