Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Reaffirms No Plans for DLC

Though Square Enix said its profits didn’t meet expectations, there’s no denying that Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is one of 2024’s biggest games. It leads The Game Awards with seven nominations alongside Astro Bot and has received universal acclaim from critics. However, game director Naoki Hamaguchi has reaffirmed that there are no plans for DLC.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Hamaguchi said the team “definitely” hears the “desire from fans”, “the voices out there”, who want a DLC. It wouldn’t be out of left field either – Final Fantasy 7 Remake received INTERmission when it arrived on PS5 in 2021.

While Hamaguchi understands the desire, “From my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible.

“So that’s why we’ve decided not to focus the development resources on creating additional episodes for DLC at the moment. We really are putting all our efforts into getting the third game out as quickly as we can. So, for the moment, that’s where we’re focusing our time.”

Thankfully, development is making strides. The third part’s plot is complete, and the team is “starting to move.” Details on what it could offer are sparse (Rocket Town looks likely), but producer Yoshinori Kitase confirmed that players can pilot the Highwind airship to “freely fly around” the world. As such, the map is being redesigned to accommodate this. Stay tuned for other updates in the meantime.
