Virtua Fighter 5 is getting a Steam remaster

Sega has announced that a remaster of Virtua Fighter 5 is coming to Steam.

The remaster will be called Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. and is set to release this winter, with no official date confirmation yet.

Sega describes it as “the Ultimate Edition of this legendary game”, and says it will boast 4K visuals with “updated hi-res textures and more”.

The game will also feature support for rollback netcode, designed to make competitive online play more responsive.

“The legendary fighting series makes its Steam debut with Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.,” Sega’s description for the game reads.

“Challenge the greatest fighters in the world in the ultimate remaster of the classic 3D fighter, now featuring Rollback netcode support, gorgeous 4K graphics, and all the bone-crunching, martial arts combat of the renowned original.

“Battle through classic VF modes like Arcade or Rank Match, create your own custom online tournaments and leagues with up to 16 players, or learn from the best in Spectator Mode. Master your fighting style to defeat all challengers in the Fifth World Fighting Tournament and become a Virtua Fighter legend.”

Sega’s head of transmedia seemingly let slip to VGC earlier this month that a new Virtua Fighter game was in the works.

In an interview about a range of topics, Justin Scarpone mentioned Virtua Fighter among a list of legacy Sega games getting modern releases.

“We have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards – Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed,” Scarpone told us.
