The League of Legends and Valorant developer claim that these updates help ensure that the content ecosystem surrounding their games is the best possible experience for players and creators.
Riot's biggest change is their "Off-Platform conduct" policy. In a blog post, Riot says that they're looking to address harmful behaviors fans experience "across the various places that touch their gaming experience." The policy update only applies to content where Riot's games are in the background. An example is if someone uses hate speech while streaming Valorant, they can still be punished, even if they were speaking to their chat and not using in-game communications.
"We want our games to be fun and welcoming to everyone," Riot says. "But sometimes bad actors do particularly bad things. When that happens, we want to ensure they don't just take that bad attitude into another Riot game and create negative experiences elsewhere. So, for the rare occasion a seriously egregious violation occurs, we're not including Riot-wide bans in our penalty system."
If you break the Terms of Service while playing Valorant, you're also banned from League of Legends and every other Riot game.
Additionally, Riot Games is looking to address several commonly sold services against company policy. Content creators sponsored by services that sell account boosting, ways to buy or sell accounts, or other banned in-game practices will be punished.
This includes talking about it in streams, videos, TikToks, social media posts, you name it. If you're even casually suggesting your audience to engage in these practices, Riot will act accordingly.
Riot clarifies that they use both human and tech-based moderation systems. They promise to prevent problematic content proactively, so penalties won't necessarily be from false flags. The company is very serious about doing what it takes to promote a healthy ecosystem for its fans.
The company is giving content creators until January 3rd, 2025 before the updates go into effect.
