The mainline Pokemon games have word filters that prevent swear words and slurs from being used. In the past, this has prevented certain Pokemon from being traded when using their official name, such as Nosepass, forcing players to give them nicknames.
Pokemon Go has its own word filter, though it’s oddly specific. Users of the Pokemon Go Reddit page have found that giving a Pokemon (in this case, a Wailord) the name “Your mum” won’t work.
What’s peculiar about this censorship is that it’s specific to this phrasing. It’s possible to name a Pokemon “Your mother” or (if you’re from the north of England) “Your Ma” without issue.
"Oh boy, I can't wait to discover what obscure profanity Niantic has brought to light with their filter here."
The game also doesn’t have any issue with insults aimed at the father. Feel free to make Pokemon that throw shade at dads around the world, as Pokemon Go will allow them to be used as nicknames.
As others in the Reddit thread pointed out, Pokemon Go has let certain swear words through the filter, especially if they’re condensed into an existing word.
It’s bizarre that this specific instance of an insult is banned and that more objectionable content is fine.
The phrase “Your mum,” even when attached to an unflattering Pokemon, like the sleepy Snorlax or lazy Slaking, isn’t exactly worthy of Oscar Wilde.
Still the game is aimed at young kids and Niantic can’t let it the be the Wild West in terms of content. Indeed, this is why Party mode is so strict about showing Avatars on the world map.
The wannabe comedians of the world are going to have to get new material if they want to sling shade in Pokemon Go. Either that, or get used to replacing “Mum” with “Mother.”
Why can’t I name my wail your mum?
