Rumor: Fortnite Could Be Adding Extraction Shooter Mode

0
A new extraction game mode is rumored for Fortnite, which could once again change the way the live-service game is seen within the video game industry. This rumor comes amid the announcement of Fortnite's brand-new first-person mode, Ballistic, which launched on December 11 in early access.

Epic Games has seemingly always seen Fortnite as not just a game but also a platform to build on top of. While Fortnite's history of massive changes and updates stretches all the way back to 2017, the game has seen some of its biggest overhauls within the last two years. New additions like LEGO Fortnite and Rocket Racing have seen the free-to-play title embrace new experiences, with Epic Games showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. This is evident with the recent announcement of Ballistic, Fortnite's very first official first-person game mode. The new experience will likely look and feel familiar to those who have logged hours in Counter-Strike and Valorant, but rumors suggest Fortnite may be delving into another genre of FPS sooner than players might have thought.

According to well-known leaker Loolo, players can expect to see a new extraction shooter debut in Fortnite. Exact details are unknown, but given Fortnite's new first-person experience, it's not surprising other game modes would be in the works. Allegedly titled Project Arnold, this new mode will play similarly to extraction-based shooters like Escape From Tarkov and Dark and Darker. Project Arnold was originally assumed to have been canceled but is now rumored to be making a return.

This news comes on the heels of Fortnite's new Ballistic game mode. This five-versus-five-game mode uses a new first-person perspective, something not yet seen in an official Fortnite playlist. The new experience launched today in early access and will most definitely change and evolve as Epic Games tinkers with Ballistic and receives feedback from players. This is likely just the start of a long line of FPS-based experiences, with Extraction being an interesting move if Epic decided to move in that direction for a future update.

Fortnite recently launched its highly anticipated Chapter 6 update, which saw several new weapons, items, and locations get added to the game's ever-growing sandbox. Not only do players have a brand-new Fortnite battle pass to complete, but they also have new movement and gameplay tweaks to check out, like wall-running and hopping. Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 1 will wrap up on February 21, 2025, giving players well over two months to enjoy all the new season has to offer, with more surprises likely on the way.
