Nintendo Switch 2 will reportedly fix the original’s biggest flaw

A new report claims that Nintendo’s next console, which will reportedly be called Nintendo Switch 2, will come with a more powerful dock and magnetic joy-cons that will eliminate stick drift.

Recent weeks have seen several accessory manufacturers circulate what is seemingly mockups of the final hardware of Nintendo’s next console.

Nintendo has yet to officially reveal its Switch successor, but the company has confirmed plans to do so during its current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.

Now, a Reddit user claiming to have seen a final retail unit of the machine has said that the next Nintendo console will be named ‘Nintendo Switch 2′ and will feature a more powerful dock, as well as magnetic joycons. Further, it’s claimed that these joy-cons will eliminate stick drift.

This is due to the new joy-cons reportedly including magnetic Hall effect joysticks, which don’t contain the same deteriorating sensor material that has caused millions of original joy-cons to malfunction.

The Verge reports that it has spoken to NextHandheld and that they are “largely convinced” that the information provided by the user is legitimate.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will reportedly include a dock featuring two USB-A, one HDMI, one ethernet, and one USB-C. The USB-C port is almost certainly used for power like the original Nintendo Switch models.

NextHandheld also claims that the dock is rated for 60W, while the Switch 2 is rated for 45W, suggesting both elements of the machine are being designed to handle significantly more power than the original.

Alleged images of Nintendo’s Switch successor appeared online in September, showing a design that’s not too dissimilar from the company’s current-gen console.

While the images are unverified, one source, who had not seen the final Switch 2 console but had been briefed on Nintendo’s plans, told VGC that the pictures matched what the company had told partners to expect from its design.

The images were also in line with earlier reports on Switch 2’s design. Previously, publications including VGC reported that Switch’s successor would include a larger 8-inch screen, and a Nintendo patent suggested that it would be opting for a new magnetic attachment for its controllers.
