The PlayStation 5 Pro is currently the most technically advanced gaming console on the market. However, like every piece of tech, improvements can be made for even larger leaps in visual fidelity and performance. In a new PS5 Pro Technical Seminar, PS5 and PS5 Pro Lead Architect Mark Cerny shared that AMD and Sony are collaborating to push Sony’s gaming tech even further. He also revealed their goals for the future.

Near the end of the presentation, Cerny revealed Sony has begun to collaborate with AMD to further improve its gaming tech. Codenamed Amethyst, this new project has two main goals. The first is to create a more ideal architecture for machine learning. The second is to develop high quality convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for game graphics. Cerny also mentions that this technology is not proprietary for PlayStation.

“AMD has been a fantastic partner for SIE for many years now, and I’m honored to announce that we have begun a deeper collaboration with a focus on Machine Learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay,” says Cerny. “Both AMD and SIE share many of the same goals related to advancing the medium of video games.”

This collaboration is the result of both companies attempting to push gaming tech even further. It should improve on what PlayStation has already accomplished with PS5 Pro, possibly with their results beginning to show with future console iterations like the inevitable PS6. Cerny discussed three specific areas and their future potential of growth: rasterized rendering, ray tracing, and machine learning.

Cerny remarked that rasterized rendering has the lowest potential of growth of the three areas with improvements coming from using a larger GPU or faster memory. For ray tracing, there is definitely growth as the technology is still pretty new. Cerny believes the tech will see “quantum leaps” in the next decade. Lastly, machine learning has the largest potential for growth, which is why it is the current focus for AMD and Sony.

It is never specifically said, but the results of this collaboration will probably not be seen until PS6. Considering the PS5 Pro just launched, and this “deeper collaboration” is just being unveiled publicly today, it may be a while until we see the fruits of their labor.
