NieR: Automata's sales achievement encompasses physical sales and digital downloads across the PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC.
NieR: Automata is the sequel to the 2010 game NieR, a spin-off and sequel to the Drakengard series (known in Japan as Drag-On Dragoon). NieR's universe takes place in an alternate timeline and is set after a different ending in the first Drakengard game, released for the PS2 in 2003.
In NieR: Automata, gamers play as Android 2B,who's embroiled in a proxy war between alien-created machines and human-developed androids. The RPG requires multiple playthroughs, which each one revealing new story elements.
It's possibly one of Square Enix's most surprising hits, with our review scoring it a 9/10, and stating, "it's a fantastic and well balanced mix between sleek PlatinumGames action and JRPG gameplay, resulting bigger than the sum of its parts. It brings forth an absolutely fascinating setting, and charming, likable and memorable characters that will both make you smile and tug at your heart strings."
While there's been no word on when we'll be getting a sequel to NieR: Automata, executive producer Yosuke Saito recently mentioned that the franchise will have a new entry as long as series creator Yoko Taro is still alive.
The latest NieR game released was NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139, which was released on the PS4, Xbox One and PC in 2021, and it was a remaster of the first NieR game.
Perhaps we'll be hearing about a new NieR game in 2025? That's one thing to hope for, given that Square Enix doesn't have any major releases planned for the upcoming year.
The latest in-game appearance of 2B is in Shift Up's action game, Stellar Blade, where the two franchises crossed over as part of premium DLC.
