The Steam Awards Are Once Again Upsetting Everyone

3
The Steam Awards recently concluded, and they've once again made everyone that was upset at The Game Awards last year come to appreciate the show, as commercialized and predictable as it's become in recent years. That's because almost every single entry has someone upset with it, though two particular winners are drawing more anger than others.

Black Myth: Wukong had a pretty decent showing, picking up three awards in total. It took home the Game of the Year award, as well as the Best Game You Suck At Award, two categories that it was pretty much guaranteed to run away with, with Black Myth: Wukong having won several other player-voted Game of the Year awards in the past, as well as Player's Choice at The Game Awards.

Black Myth: Wukong's Steam Award For Best Story Has Baffled Everyone

It also managed to pick up the Outstanding Story-Rich Game award, though that one is raising a lot more eyebrows. It managed to beat the likes of Mouthwashing, Ghost of Tsushima, and Final Fantasy 16, despite having what many would consider a pretty non-existent story. Twitter users like Network_Synth even mention that they haven't heard a single person talk about Black Myth: Wukong's story at all.

Another Twitter user called KeyToAeris has also voiced their disappointment with The Steam Awards, with both Black Myth: Wukong's award for best story and Red Dead Redemption's win for best soundtrack, which managed to beat games such as Silent Hill 2 and Horizon Forbidden West. It's in this particular tweet that we see a lot more upset people too.

One user called VeryClumsyMage is upset with Elden Ring winning the Labor of Love award, beating the likes of No Man's Sky and Stardew Valley, and Liar's Bar winning Most Innovative Gameplay over the likes of Balatro and Helldivers 2. Others are upset by Silent Hill 2 winning Outstanding Visual Style over Nine Sols and Metaphor: ReFantazio. It's a bit of a mess really.

Of course, this is what you get from player voting, as it's very obvious that people pick their favorites rather than games that deserve particular awards. The Steam Awards have always been a bit of a joke in that regard, with last year's awards getting hijacked by salty Red Dead Redemption 2 fans giving the game Labor of Love as a joke. Unfortunately, it won't be taken seriously without any moderation, so I'll see you at this time next year for the 2025 outcry.
