Elden Ring Nightreign Is Scrapping Popular Souls Feature

3.5
Elden Ring Nightreign has cut an iconic feature that has been a part of the Dark Souls trilogy, along with the original Elden Ring, due to the a fundamental shift in the spin-off’s gameplay.

One of the ways in which the Souls games handled multiplayer content is by allowing players to leave messages on the overworld for other people to see. This can be used for good, such as warning players about Mimics or evil, by hinting that treasure awaits in a bottomless pit.

Elden Ring players had the ability to leave messages for each other, but that is no longer part of the game. According to an interview with IGN Japan (via Eurogamer), the ability to write notes has been removed from Elden Ring Nightreign.

According to Elden Ring Nightreign Director Junya Ishizaki, the messaging feature wasn’t implemented because the average battle in the game only last for around forty minutes, owing to its Monster Hunter-style quests.

The ghosts of deceased players can still be seen rolling around on the overworld, but the only intentional interactions will be between co-op players. This is due to Elden Ring Nightreign allowing three players to work together when killing bosses.

There’s no denying that the soapstone messages written in the Souls games were mostly used for comedy purposes. To this day, Dark Souls Remastered still has “Amazing Chest Ahead” near Gwynevere’s chamber, showing the level of humor on display by the fanbase.

Losing the ability to create memetic notes in Elden Rign Nightreign is a huge shame, but it makes sense, considering how fundamentally different the gameplay experience is. The segmented nature of the world means players won’t have time to sit around reading and writing, not when they have giant monsters to slay.
