Bay 12 and Kitfox Games have announced that the Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode is set to officially launch out of beta later this month. This addition will let you control a character and take on quests and hidden stories in a shift from the game's standard.

Adams, the game’s co-creator, and Alexandra Orlando of Kitfox Games detailed the upcoming gameplay on Steam, alongside an announcement trailer that confirmed the January 23, 2025, launch date. Adventure Mode has been part of the beta branch since April 2024, with the confirmation marking a major milestone for this legendary fantasy simulation.

Dwarf Fortress is known for its colony management gameplay, but this new update somewhat turns the tables, letting you dive into a roguelike RPG experience. It brings this expansive and procedurally generated world where you explore, search for treasures, and take on quests.

Players will notice the personal ground-level perspective that comes with the Adventure Mode—a sharp contrast from Fortress Mode’s structure and top-down management. So, rather than managing a bustling colony of dwarves, you will transform into an adventurer, facing the same dangers as the dwarves, venturing into your world, and interacting with the NPCs.

Some of the new additions to expect include enhanced character creation, new soundtrack features, baby portraits, and tons of tweaks. However, you can't transfer any progress and characters from the beta version. Besides, previously teased features such as deeper advanced crafting systems are still in development and may not make it into the next mode.

Fortress Mode remains a crucial part of the game's experience, with developers promising to regularly update the gameplay styles even after Adventure Mode arrives. The latter is also expected to receive several updates as the developers continue to refine that Roguelike quest adventure.

Dwarf Fortress was first released in 2006, with the Steam debut in 2023 bringing the most notable success. The upcoming RPG experience marks the game’s ambitious and influential journey, which keeps long-time fans and newcomers curious about its blend of strategy and chaos.
