Report: Xbox One will be region-locked

The Xbox One will be region-locked, meaning all software must match the region of the console itself, Microsoft confirmed to Digital Trends. This means a US Xbox One won't be able to play games imported from Europe or Japan, for example.

"Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One."

The Xbox 360 isn't completely region-locked – Microsoft currently allows studios to choose whether their games will work across regions. The PlayStation 3 is region-free, and all games except for Persona 4 Arena work on every console, regardless of spatial location. It's unclear if the PlayStation 4 will be similarly region-free.

LuckyStriker This sucks. I live Germany and they are cutting way too much games here. That's why we had to buy games from other countries. For example: CoD, GTA, Saints Row,....
Also they make a few games completely unavailable for us like Gears of War 1/2, Dead Rising, ...


That's why most of us bought stuff from other countries :(
And that's the 10 bad message I hear about the Xbox One. Don't think I'm gonna get it.

Honestly, I'm switching over to the PlayStation. All of my friends play it, and honestly it seems more gaming focused, unlike the Xbox One which seems more entertainment focused.

This is a dumb move on their part. I used to work at GameStop here in Florida and I used to get customers from all over the world and one of the reasons we sold more PS3's than anything else was because tourists from the UK/South America would come and buy hundreds of dollars worth of video games because they are cheaper here. Most people would ask if the Xbox was region free and we said only certain games and they would just switch and buy a PlayStation 3.

We may not care much, but from a sales standpoint it hurts Microsoft.
