Windows 8.1 Start button shown in leaked screenshots

Leaked screenshots have revealed the look of the Start button that's rumored to be returning to Windows in its 8.1 update. Paul Thurrott has posted images showing the brand new Start button fashioned as an unadorned Windows 8 icon. According to ZDNet, clicking on the button will likely return users to the Start Screen, rather than opening a menu like in earlier versions of Windows. However, the Start Screen can reportedly now use your desktop wallpaper as its background, helping to blend the potentially jarring change between the desktop and Modern UI style interface.

The Verge learned earlier this year both that the Start button would be returning and that a boot to desktop option is being considered for the coming update. Thurrott is also reporting that a boot to desktop option will be included, but that it will be turned off by default. Though Microsoft is yet to confirm that either of these options will be present in Windows 8.1, this new leak certainly helps to further substantiate the Start button's return.

Agreed, but Windows 7 still looks better!

Windows 7 will remain the best until they bring back the full desktop with the start menu and everything because that is what made a PC a PC, if I wanted these crappy tiles I would go get a windows tablet.


To me that's what makes the PC perfect. I absolutely hated Windows 8 layout. If it was more closer to Windows 7 I might have put up with it. But until another computer comes out that is closer to Windows 7, I won't be buying another computer that isn't Windows 7.

Frog Yeah that looks pretty nice. Much better than the original crap of Windows 8.

It does but I think we are still going to have the stupid titles and this desktop won't do that much.


That was the main reason that made me switch back to Windows 7, I didn't like the layout of Windows 8 at all.


I still have windows 7 aswell, still looks the best to me.


Hopefully in the new Windows version(Whenever that is) they will make it more like Windows 7 and not like Windows 8.


I also hope this, but I really can't see them going backwards in design. Personally when w7 isn't supported anymore, I'm switching to linux.
