GameStop 'applauds Microsoft' for Xbox One DRM revision
Microsoft today announced the complete withdrawal of the Xbox One's controversial restrictions on used games and the requirement of an internet connection for license checks once every 24 hours.
"GameStop welcomes today's announcement from Microsoft about changes in functionality for its next-generation console, the Xbox One," said a GameStop rep in an official statement to Polygon in response to the announcement.
"This is great news for gamers and we applaud Microsoft for understanding consumers and the importance of the pre-owned market," they added.
The console's previously proposed DRM measures would have restricted the sale of used games between gamers, and would allegedly have saw Microsoft and publishers take a cut of profits made from used game sales at retail. This would have had huge implications for major organizations like GameStop, which rely heavily on profits from the used games market.
But GameStop had said in May that it would commit to support of Xbox One despite used game policy concerns. "I think what is important to note is that all three of the console companies that have launched have now come back and they say, 'I realise the value of the buy-sell-trade model,' and they have built that into their new consoles moving forward," said GameStop president Tony Bartel at the time.

GTFO I prefer the DRM, since it is the future!**** its a great idea. Dont feed into that more money better developing. They just want money for themselves. **** them the public hardly has any money as it is so to damn fukin right they should drop there shitty restrictions
With digital sales rising etc...
More money to publishers which would mean they would have more money to develop games.
And running games off the hard drive was a great advantage, espically changing games without having to switch disks!
Also the sharing feature was a great idea.
People dont notice that steam etc... Has been using this for a while.

Publishers and developers are very different, the extra money they would have made from their god awful DRM proposition would have gone straight to executives pockets , no where close to any more game development.

slapshot101 I am sure GameStop is quite happy to see that their presious used game market will not be taken away.
Isn't that what the article is saying?

This is cool. Close to everyone wins now. GameStop gets income. Microsoft gets income. And most of the Xbox audience gets what it wanted for the most part. I guess Sony will get some drop in sales now, but they are still going to get good income as well. Great thing.

Microsoft were never going to take a cut. They confirmed that ages ago.

Not surprised GameStop would "applaud" Microsoft, now GameStop doesn't have to worry about losing money.

Why wouldn't they like this, the majority of Gamestops business is done through trade-in games and second hand games.
Microsoft doesn't listen to gamers, they listened to the penny dropping and them losing to the competition, on both lost pre-orders and the amount of hate they were getting on the internet. They thought they could get away with it, they knew before E3, during E3 and after that the DRM wasn't wanted.
Still doesn't help them now as it is still showing they admitted defeat and will only people hate them more on principle, the console is still required to have kinect, more expensive, and pushing it as a media cable box - not a gaming console.
