GameStop 'applauds Microsoft' for Xbox One DRM revision

GameStop has "applauded" Microsoft for ditching its Xbox One used game DRM policies and mandatory online checks.


Microsoft today announced the complete withdrawal of the Xbox One's controversial restrictions on used games and the requirement of an internet connection for license checks once every 24 hours.

"GameStop welcomes today's announcement from Microsoft about changes in functionality for its next-generation console, the Xbox One," said a GameStop rep in an official statement to Polygon in response to the announcement.

"This is great news for gamers and we applaud Microsoft for understanding consumers and the importance of the pre-owned market," they added.

The console's previously proposed DRM measures would have restricted the sale of used games between gamers, and would allegedly have saw Microsoft and publishers take a cut of profits made from used game sales at retail. This would have had huge implications for major organizations like GameStop, which rely heavily on profits from the used games market.

But GameStop had said in May that it would commit to support of Xbox One despite used game policy concerns. "I think what is important to note is that all three of the console companies that have launched have now come back and they say, 'I realise the value of the buy-sell-trade model,' and they have built that into their new consoles moving forward," said GameStop president Tony Bartel at the time.

He probably felt like a truck was lifted from his shoulders when he heard this.

I am sure he did, their stock price rose by 5% alreeady from this news.

That's stupid. I'm CONSIDERING getting a PS4, but don't have the money to do so. I'm leaning towards PS4 because the console is $100 cheaper(which is alot), you don't need Kinect on when you're playing, which restricts my basic rights of privacy and my past of the Xbox 360 is generally good but the PS4 looks better ^_^.

You said $100 dollars is a lot. So you would go buy a car that cost $25000 rether then a car that cost 25100 just because its cheaper but don't look at what it had that is better then the other car(this has nothing to do with this just making a point)


That literally made no sense,

Some people can't afford $100 more because of their situation in life

I'm sorry we don't all have constant income from parents to get what we want


Also a car is completely different because you need it way more than a game console. if the car that was $100 more would benefit me more in some way then id save up the extra one hundred. the consoles are nearly the exact same? so paying $100 more for something that you wont benefit more from is just pointless.

PS4
- Removable HDD.
- Support for Indie Games.
- Higher Specs.
- 100$ less.

xBox
- Kinect is still watching you.
- Cannot detach Kinect from xBox.
- Cannot cover Kinect sensor.
- I don't want to spend 100$ on a sensor that is going to be watching me and is going to be virtually unused.


Thats to bad that you can turn the kinect completely off.


That's too bad. They say it's off, but is it really? Or are they just comforting you. I'd rather not have it there, and save $100 and put that towards something that'll help my gaming experience.


To bad all your talking about is the keniect and not the xbox and the kenict improves the xbox one overall. what dose ps4 have in fetures that xbox one dosent? cause i know ps4 cant do two things at once like listening to pandora and still play games, or surfing the web will still playing games also watching t.v ect. ect. ect. and therse plenty of more features, Give me somthing that would sway me to the ps4?


First off you can turn it all the way off they all ready stated that. plus just point it at a wall if you are so scared. 2nd xbox has a HDMI input that PS4 does not. Xbox one also has a port for a external hard drive. PS4 does not. Xbox one has 300k cloud servers that some games such as titan fall and call of duty can use for dedicated servers not to mention those cloud servers will be used to load AI and terrain in some games.


And what dose ps4 have ****! So how is ps4 better?


Lmao people like you make me laugh, still in the delusional sate that some how he Xbox one is better, please tell everyone why the Xbox one is actually better. First off tell me even though PS4 has a higher spec and more expensive components. PS$ made by a non money greedy company who put there customers needs first. PS4 online is cheaper and you get Plus where you get actually good free games to play every month. Has better exclusives, Publishers have all ready said they prefer the PS4, just look at DAY Z choosing to only come out on PS4.

Easy solution to kinect. When Xbox is off diconnect it. When you want to play reconnect it.

the only disadvantages in the original comment only referred to the kinect yet the advantages you tried listing for the ps4 arent that effective except maybe the price as ps4 states their giving away 15 free games mostly indie....great way to show support give away their games for free and where does it say the ps4 has better specs cause EVERYWHERE i have looked hey have had the same so by all means provide me a link

Not true. I am a huge gamer who goes to friends houses, and enjoys playing my friends games and having a good time. But with the Xbox One, I wouldn't be able to do that at all. Thats why I was leaning towards the PS4. But now that why have dropped all this, Im thinking about buying a Xbox One now.

BTW, I could care less if the Kinect is watching me. Im not doing anything stupid.
