Google reportedly working on Android game console

4.5
Several third-party game consoles have been developed using Google's Android operating system, but a new report says the tech giant wants to release its own console, likely within the year.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Google is working on an Android console as well as a smart watch that runs the operating system. The devices could be released as early as this fall, the report claims, citing unnamed sources.

The report doesn't clarify if Google would make the device itself or if it would be made through a third-party hardware provider, a move the company has used extensively with its Nexus brand of smartphones and tablets. The Journal's sources claim the devices are being made in anticipation of similar products by Apple, which has long been rumored to be working on smart watch and television devices that may possibly run iOS apps.

Android, the most-used smartphone operating system in the world, has been used in several gaming devices that have launched in the past year. Ouya, which publicly launched through retail outlets Tuesday, is perhaps the most notable console running Android, having obtained tremendous crowdfunding support through Kickstarter. Most Android gaming devices released so far have used interface skins and their own stores, however, making their Android roots less noticeable.

LuckyOtter Personally I would never buy this but I can see it selling a lot. Just like the Oyua or whatever it's called.

Yeah the Oyua, i personally think google's console will sell more just because they have more money to spend on better hardware, so i feel it will be better.

DLT I've always thought it would be a good idea for Google to make a console. I'm not sure how well it will work with android though.

Yeah google should make something good with their money, we'll have to see what they can come up with, because im still not too keen on the idea on a console for apps that can be played on a phone, but i hope it goes well, and if the console looks good and is a success, if its not a crazy price, ill look into buying it for myself.

NinjaWizard That would actually be a really unique thing for them to do. I would be interested in seeing the price of it and maybe buying it. I would love to get it if it's in a reasonable price range. It would be very cool if they made some of the Play Store Apps into game discs to play on this.

Its not unique, there another one out at the moment, my friend got it, he said it was bad though, hopefully google can do better with there billions.

Lano_xD I bet apple are gonna join the mainstream and make a games console.
Of course:
The Iconsole, cost $200000

I think that too. I think apple could change and dominate the market if they were to do that, but they dont really have the footing they need for it yet.

wok To be honest, i dont see this selling alot, i personally wouldn't wont to play apps on a console.

Maybe not you or me but apparently there is a market for this stuff. The OUYA, a kickstarter project, is doing great except they cant fully meet the demand. Google would do a great job of making a small android based console and selling it cheap, putting it in everyones price range and hands.

People need to start looking at what I post in the News smh.

Apple is supposedly supposed to be releasing a game console and will be announcing it around the same time as the new Apple TV announcement. That's the reason why Google is suddenly making a console anyway, to keep up with competition.

I'm not sure how well it would do though. With the Xbox one and PS4 coming out, many are going to be playing those systems a lot. The honeymoon stage for new things like the new consoles lasts for awhile. I bet we would download all the games from Google Play though. That would be pretty cool to play apps on the console.
