PS4 allows for digital library access from any console

The PlayStation 4 will allow users to access their digital library of games from any PS4 console, Sony has confirmed.

Speaking at Develop today, Neil Brown, a senior engineer at Sony, said that the system will allow gamers quick access to their digital libraries from any PS4 anywhere, simply by logging into their PSN accounts.

"You can visit your friends house you can log into your account and play any game from your digital library, which is good," said Brown, reports Official PlayStation Magazine UK.

This isn't dissimilar to functionality on the current-gen consoles, which also allow remote access to PSN/Xbox Live accounts and the digitally-purchased games attached to them. But Brown points out that the PS4's ability to play a game as it's being downloaded is what makes it viable.

"But how useful is that if it takes half a day to download the game you want to play?" added Brown. "With Play As You Download you get much quicker access to at least the first section of the game so you can start playing quicker. So this makes a digital library a practical option in the real world."

The Xbox One will allow for similar functionality - with access only to digital games, but like the PS4, you will not be able to access your physical retail games without carrying the discs themselves.

Microsoft had originally planned for Xbox One owners to also have remote access to their physical games library (via a digital download) without the need to carry their discs around, but the feature was dropped since it would have relied completely on the console's controversial game licensing DRM policies, which the firm spectacularly ditched in June.

Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date of November 2013. It will go head-to-head with the PS4 release which is currently officially 'holiday 2013'.

DNaDee I feel like the mindless PS4 supporters don't understand that this is nothing new. You could already do this on Xbox 360, I've done it for years. If I download Minecraft, I can go to my friends house, sign into my account, download Minecraft for free there and buy it. It's not a new concept. The only thing new about it is play as you download (most people don't have internet good enough for that anyway) and background downloads, both of which the Xbox One also has.

Sony is just now catching up to the Xbox 360

If you were to actually read the article you would see: "This isn't dissimilar to functionality on the current-gen consoles, which also allow remote access to PSN/Xbox Live accounts and the digitally-purchased games attached to them." Microsoft hasn't said anything about a play as you download feature, so, in this case, Microsoft needs to catch up to Sony.

Umm... Yeah they did. I think they announced that on their reveal day. If not then at E3. The article is talking about from a disk. Not from online. Which is what is what you were saying they can't do. You can download a game from the marketplace and play as you download. Xbox hasn't said anything about installing from a disk though. Although if you're downloading it from online and can play it, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do it from a disk. Anyway the article is a little unclear and I see that you have not read previous post's so maybe you should read more into things then you would see.

M$ has confirmed that you can play as the disk installs, but hasn't confirmed if you can play as you download. This article is specifically talking about the way you can log in to any PS4 and download any game from your digital library, which as I stated, can be currently done on both xbox 360 AND PS3. Now, with the PS4(and probably X1) you can play as you download, which is revolutionary for consoles. I replied to OP because his fanboy-ism is blocking his judgement.
