Xbox One prototypes came in all shapes and sizes

4.6
Whatever you think about the final Xbox One design, at least you can be safe in the knowledge that it was deemed the best of a huge number of prototypes.

At Microsoft's recent Worldwide Partner Conference, Xbox creative director Carl Ledbetter showed off a load of prototype designs ranging from small to large, round to square and black to very dark grey.

As reported by Polygon, Ledbetter explained: "We wanted to make [Xbox One] simple and elegant, and we wanted it to be crafted and tailored, so it's all about quality. Using those principles, we started to design."

The design team, consisting of around 30 people, started off by sketching different console designs then sent those to a Microsoft model shop where they were built and placed in people's living rooms to see how they looked. If a design looked good enough, the team would then work with the engineering team to figure out how to put the Xbox One components inside it.

Having decided on the final design, Ledbetter said it was time to discuss the finer details of the console's appearance. "This is where we start to apply things like gloss and matte finishes. How does the vent pattern look? How does the brand come through the front? How do we make the font look high quality, just like the high definition televisions in people's living rooms?"

The same process was used for the Xbox One controller, with over 200 prototypes built in-house. "When people put these in their hands, they could tell the difference between a 10th of a millimetre in size," Ledbetter said.

In May, Microsoft released a video showing the design process of the console, Kinect and controller.

MW2-Rush Not gonna lie, I am glad the Xbox One came out the way it did. Not saying that the prototypes looked bad, but it does look better.

Just a little big though. But I like it.

bigchukka Microsoft aren't the best a shaping their products are they? not saying the PS4 looks better in anyway.

Im glad they turned out with the Xbox Ones design..people hate it but it's fine.

Well i would put money on some of the PS4 prototypes not looking much better either. The final product isn't that bad so we can't complain

Neither of them look appealing in my opinion, but the appearance honestly isn't what matters.

ShadowBoltDashie I remember seeing a video where they showed all the pre-built Kinects, controllers and I think the Xbox One consoles as well. They had them all on a desk and I think they were 3D printed to show what they all looked like.

Yeah that what I was going to say. Those pictures are nice but the video you mention is much better, surprised they didn't just post that in the first place.

I havent seen the video. Ill go look for it now.
