Xbox One: Microsoft “didn’t push on its benefits enough”, says dev

4.5
Microsoft didn’t do enough to sell gamers on its original Xbox One DRM policies, according to an individual presenting as a Microsoft developer.

An anonymous, alleged Xbox One developer and Microsoft employee took to Reddit to host an AMA on the new console.

“Personally I was a little surprised at the timeframe which we decided on the DRM reversal. I thought we didn’t push on its benefits enough,” the supposed developer said.

“The petition shows there are lots of people who want these benefits as much as I do and clearly our execs care or Marc Whitten wouldn’t have referred to it in his IGN interview.”

As for what those benefits were, the dev apparently confirmed that the no-disc game sharing feature was for full games – not short trials, as rumoured.

“Its purpose was to eliminate the need to ever have to physically hand someone a game that you bought to share with them,” they said.

The dev also has come interesting little snippets to share about the console in general. One thing he or she revealed is that the OS’s Snap feature – allowing you to switch back and forth between applications – only works with some app.

“Snapping is only available to certain apps such as IE, Skype, the game DVR upload tool, etc. Game titles cannot be snapped,” they said.

The dev said the Xbox One’s fans are “almost inaudible”, and that the new Kinect sensor costs almost as much as the console to manufacture.

“The goal with having a Kinect ship with every Xbox is to guarantee to game developers if they implement Kinect features into their games, everyone who has an Xbox will be able to experience it,” they said.

“I often see people dismiss the Kinect instantly because they haven’t seen it work like I have. It is an integral part of the Xbox One experience. The number of features on the Xbox One that uses the Kinect is almost too many to count. I can’t imagine using the console without it.”

The site’s moderators believe they have confirmed the poster’s identity, and the dev is notably careful to avoid outing their identity, but the information cannot, of course, be verified.

thats because theres no benefits about not being able to do what you want with something you payed for if you want a digital library thats why theres pc gaming go there. some of us just want to have somthing we can quickly hook up and take anywhere not have to worry about internet being "required" and be able to pop the same disc in a friends console and not have any drm shareing issues.

I honestly don't see how they did such a bad job at presenting DRM. They could have said it was very similar to Steam and people would have loved it. Instead they told us it would have DRM but said nothing else while wild rumors on the internet spread and since the internet is what it is people just blindly followed what someone else said and spread more rumors. I have seen so many people criticizing it for illegitimate reasons or none at all. Anyway with that statement aside I'm going to Steam's summer sale where I can find all the games on the Xbox Marketplace for thirty dollars cheaper.

I want the DRM policies back, it was an amazing feature to be able to give games to your friends from the console? that's amazing. + 300,00 DEDICATED servers... the current gen xbox only has 1,500 and it's so smooth, imagine 300,000.

-Frys- I Think their chargin to much 499$ Thats alot
Who knows if you can even backtrack or get all your DLC and games downloaded from the 360 to the One?

I don't think either company is charging to much.

Many analysts have said that both consoles are reasonably priced for what they offer.

PS4 dropped the eye from what came with the PS4 just to make it cheaper than the xbox one.

I don't see them changing anything else. They could drop the price but won't.

I will pick what im getting after release...i want to see which i prefer.

Woobie
-Mark They did a horrible job at giving details as to what the policies were.

I think if they were more informative that people would of really liked it.

I was really attracted to thought of never having to mess with my disk again after I put it into my Xbox.

They made it seem like all they were doing was controlling.. that was their problem.

I know it was actually good
