Kinect:Microsoft pledges to “aggressively challenge” government spying

Xbox One’s Kinect monitoring tech has had gamers and industry professionals tugging at their collars nervously since it was announced, but Microsoft has stated that it will aggressively challenge any government that uses the device to spy into our homes.

In a statement to The Verge, a Microsoft rep wrote, “Absent a new law, we don’t believe the government has the legal authority to compel us or any other company that makes products with cameras and microphones to start collecting voice and video data.

“We’d aggressively challenge in court any attempts to try and force us to do so.”

The statement follows concerns of Microsoft’s date sharing with the NSA and other government bodies via the US Congress-baked PRISM surveillance initiative.

Microsoft recently explained the nature of its data-sharing, following claims that it has relinquished data from Skype calls, SkyDrive accounts and other services to comply with legal obligations placed on corporations as part of the PRISM strategy.

Its not whether or not they will watch you (play video games). Its the fact that they have the ABILITY TO watch you.
Also its an invasion of security and privacy that is protected under 4th Amendment (in the US). If we allow them this, there is no telling what they will do next. Its basically a stepping stone to becoming a country completely policed by its government and military. I can assure you that when millions of these consoles end up in our homes the US government will do whatever it can to have access to them (and will gain access). Who's not to say Sony will do the same thing.
I understand I made a drastic jump from Kinects camera and the US becoming a country completely ruled by its government, but like I said, its a stepping stone and so far everything else has been breached.


I'm pretty sure if they wanted to spy on people (as rediculous as it sounds) they would make Kinect be switched on all of the time which it isn't. I can't believe people think the leading software development companie(s) would want to spy on people. I mean come on for hells sake.


These "leading" software development companies have already allowed US government agencies to spy on its customers. Where the hell have you been.


I live in the UK, its kinda ridiculous to think that even if the government spied on you, what would they do with a video stream of someone being killed on a FPS game or having pictures of your bedroom? If they wanted to spy on you i'm sure they would have introduced something more 'top secret' considering it's the government's plans to spy on consumers.


They would not attempt to do this in the Uk, I have never heard such a thing.


Me niether, the only reason this has been such a big thing is because Microsoft is part of the PRISM programe. Wow such a big deal, not.
At the people at the top of the bubble, Microsoft hasn't confirmed that they have been giving the PRISM program anything.

If they do end up "spying" on us, then just point the Kinect the opposite direction, chances are a large percentage of people who buy the Xbox One will not fully make use of all the Kinects features, so just point it at the wall etc. As I think it's safe to say people are more fully concerned about them being able to see you than hear you. I'm honestly not that bothered if they end up spying on me and they can only hear me. However if they could see me I'd obviously be more worried. So just point the Kinect at the wall if you have to have it plugged in. I can't remember if you still need to have it always plugged in? You may say you shouldn't have to turn it to the wall or away from you, but it will take like a few seconds of your time, and thats pretty much your problem solved. If someone could clarify if you need to have the Kinect always plugged in I'd be thankful to know!
