Apple profits fall again but iPhone sales rise

4.6
Apple has reported a second consecutive drop in quarterly profits despite a significant increase in iPhone sales.

The company posted revenue of $35.3 billion (£23b) and net profit of $6.9 billion (£4.5b) for the three months ended June 29, 2013, compared to revenue of $35 billion (£22.8b) and net profit of $8.8 billion (£5.7b) for the same period a year ago.

Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones, a record for its third quarter, compared to 26 million a year ago. However, IPad sales declined from 17 million to 14.6 million, while Mac sales dipped from four million to 3.8 million.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said: "We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, software and services.

"We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014."

In April, Apple posted its first quarterly drop in profits in ten years, shortly before announcing that iOS App Store downloads had topped 50 billion. In early July, Apple revealed the all-time best selling iPhone and iPad apps.

In reality, it's not that big of a decrease. They are still making loads of money. Nothing to be worried about on Apple's end. And I personally can't wait for iOS7, which I believe will be a game-changer for apple.

I think other, way cheeper tablets like the Kindle are taking a lot of competition away from Apple due to the price factor. I think this next quarter with the 2 new iPhones, iOS 7 and many other products their sales will go up but it will never be the same as when Steve Jobs was there.

Ranzee I've had my iPad 2 years and never actually bought a app..

Did you jailbreak it or something? iDevices without apps are boring in my opinion. Unless it's an iMac/MacBook, I think that iDevices are built for fun and games. I think once the next iPad is out, I'll definitely be making the investment.

I really want an iPhone, they're too expensive, but I guess It is a quality phone and most probably worth the money.

Rockstar_Games Everyone keeps hating on apple but still buys there products

Apple does make pretty good products, the iPhone and the Mac are pretty good systems, regardless of some disadvantages that come with owning them, i personally buy apple products because of the quality

F-18 So, uhm. How does that work.

I don't know how well Mac products are doing, but they can't be doing that good if their profits fell and the iPhone rises in sales. iPhone is basically carrying Apple.

The iPhone is pretty much generating most of their profits at the moment.. Hopefully Apple can innovate a little and bring out a new line of products

Nov Apple wouldn't be where it is today without the iPhone. For them to not really be reinventing it either, that's risky. People are going to catch on and start taking their business elsewhere.

Yeah and instead of trying new things they just over use there old things
