Next-gen Tomb Raider sequel announced

4.6
A next-generation sequel to Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider is currently in development, Square Enix has announced.

The publisher's US and Europe chief executive, Phil Rogers, has published a notice online to explain that a successor to the acclaimed Tomb Raider game is "well in development".

"Square Enix is in production with a number of next generation projects, including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III, which were announced at this year's E3, and Thief coming in 2014," Rogers said.

"I am also excited to reveal that we are well into development on a next-generation Tomb Raider sequel - something you may have heard about recently!"

The rest of Rogers' blog post detailed Square Enix's future strategy for America and Europe, addressing concerns that the publisher may be abandoning console gaming for the mobile market.

"I can categorically say that we're not abandoning core, triple-A console and PC games," Rogers said.

"We're working hard at improving how we develop our games and how we release them, and I want to explain that in a little more detail."

Rogers also made it clear that Square Enix will continue to release games on mobile platforms, such as the recent iOS title Deus Ex: The Fall.

"First and foremost, we are a games company and today we devote most of our time and effort into developing new and rich gameplay experiences, worlds and characters," he explained.

"At the same time new business models have risen up, which we periodically will try to explore.

"I know this can be frustrating for some long-time fans of our games, particularly if it seems that we're heading in unfamiliar directions without much in the way of explanation. Explaining our approach to these opportunities is something we're working to improve on.

"That said, we need to experiment and adapt or it's likely we won't always be in a position to keep investing in the ways we need, to build-out our games and offer excellence to you, our gamers.

"We plan to share a fuller title release plan with you soon on games ranging from next-gen blockbusters (the above mentioned Tomb Raider sequel) to new cutting-edge tablet and mobile games (such as the recently released Deus Ex: The Fall), to live and online PC games (our now in beta Heroes & Generals)."

Its been a bit weak imo

How so?

I think the newest Tomb Raider was great, maybe a longer story wouldn't hurt.

The PlayStation Tomb-Raider was a hit in my opinion. What the gaming community would call a "hot avatar" who knows how to shoot a dinosaur directly in the eye while doing a back flip.. How can you not be excited to see her do it again with better graphics and better gameplay?

Jakeston I didn't know Tomb Raider would be popular enough to get a sequel. Kudos to them. Haha.

Apparently the new Tomb Raider did very well. I enjoyed it so from my perspective I can see why they have decided to do another sequel but I just didn't know that so many people enjoyed it that much for them to notice it and make a sequel.
