Xbox One DRM backlash was unfair, suggests Molyneux
Speaking with TechRadar, the former Microsoft studios head said, “It’s quite an unfair thought that Microsoft are trying to control our gaming, they’re trying to force us to be online all the time. [People] didn’t really think that through.”
Molyneux suggested that perhaps Microsoft was just doing what it felt it had to in order to create a strong long-term strategy, but added that a few mistakes gave the public an opening to unfairly savage the company.
“I know Microsoft,” he continued. “I know they were only doing things because they thought they were long-reaching and long-thinking. But the world we live in now is that we have to realise, especially if you’re a big corporation, if you make one step wrong, the world will leap on you, and unfairly, very unfairly, they will judge you.”
“Like everything else in our world, when something turns slightly bad it goes very bad and you have to make big correctional steps to get yourself back on track.”
He concluded, “Microsoft did the reversal and we should have all turned round and said ‘fantastic, you’ve really listened to what we’re said’. But you have to over-correct to get back on line.”

varNodus I think to many people were complaining about it.
Yeah but now the people who complained about it want it back. Seriously make up your mind.
Honestly, no matter what Microsoft does people are going to complain.

I agree entirely. I hate that they changed the DRM. Like the vast majority of gamers, I have a reliable internet connection.
That is the most inconsiderate statement I've ever heard. Just think about the people that don't have connection to the internet
- Soldiers/Marines don't have connection to the internet so that cancels them out
- Older people who just want to have a console at their house so their kids/nephews can play
- People who live in third world countries
- Travellers
and there's probably more but I don't want to waste my time listing them.
Did you know nearly a fifth of British households still have no access to the internet?
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/08/09/people-without-internet-u_n_3730175.html
And that's not even including the possible scenarios which may occur that will remove internet access such as earthquakes, power outages, switching internet service providers, lack of money etc.
Think about others before making that absurd statement
Well that's great and all but if you don't have internet there are other options. Instead of complaining just buy a PS4. Also if your traveling for vacation then you shouldn't be bringing your Xbox anyway and if you do any decent hotel will have wifi. Did you even think about the earthquake part? If there was an earthquake that knocked out the internet I think the last thing on people's mind would be I can't play my Xbox. Also people that can't afford internet are probably spending their money on more important things then a gaming system. The only thing I agree with is the soldiers part but I don't think most people know this but at the major bases they have wifi. All you had to do was connect to the internet with the Xbox which they could easily do.
what about halo? i'm a big halo fan and guess what, halo isn't on the ps4. what about other xbox only games? and with the earthquake thing, i think more what he was getting at is that there are occasions that internet goes out for what ever reason, be it big or small. as for travelers, what about people who travel 24/7 for work or what ever reason and want to bring some entertainment along with you? alot of hotels require you to pay for internet and if your traveling for work, you don't really get to choose whether you stay at a hotel with free internet or not, or any internet at all. and finally as for the not being able to afford internet, in case you didn't know internet is a MONTHLY charge, not a one time fee. an xbox is a one time fee plus some money here and there for games when you can. can't pay your internet this month? oh well no internet anymore for a while! and i know plenty of people who live like that, who can't afford ANOTHER monthly charge on their head but can afford a one time fee when they save up enough money.

I'm sure a third world country wouldn't be able to afford the Xbox One.
Are you kidding on? If there is a "power outage" then it really doesn't matter because you wouldn't be able to play the Xbox... And lack of money? If you are low on the cash then I don't think you will be paying 429 ($500) for the Xbox anyways..

I don't see how the backlash was unfair. I doubt they would have listened to anyone without that backlash. People being very upset about it was most likely a huge reason on why they changed the DRM policy as fast as they did (which don't get me wrong, they most likely were going to change it anyway with those low preorders.) I know some people did the whole unneeded name calling thing, but I think the backlash in general was needed. This guy should know that negative people with negative comments are the loudest thing on the internet. The number of current preorders for Xbox One show how happy a large portion of the Xbox community is at the DRM change. You're just always going to have the people that legitimately dislike your choice and even more people that just like to hate everything.

MoDOTDavidDo0MZero_Point_Five I don't see why people were soo agasint being online all the time... I mean, most homes have internet and are always online anyway. When do you really ever play offline on xbox?
I agree entirely. I hate that they changed the DRM. Like the vast majority of gamers, I have a reliable internet connection. My Xbox 360 connects to the internet daily. With the Xbox One's original DRM, you were not required to even power on your console daily. It would have connected automatically, once a day, and checked your product licenses against your downloaded and played games. What's the big deal there if you aren't trying to exploit the system?? Also, keep in mind that the reversal of the DRM means that we lost the "Family Share" feature. As a gamer with 5 gamer nephews, this feature would have saved us hundreds, if not thousands, a year. We all play the same games. Games we now have to buy 6 copies of. With the original DRM we would only have to buy ONE copy. However, NO, now we can no longer save loads of cash every year. All because of a bunch of conspiracy theorists crying and moaning and throwing tantrums online. Thanks a lot to the ignorant masses. I second the notion put forth by 0.5, How many xbox gamers nowadays DON'T have internet?? Or play offline at all? Before anyone makes the argument, "what if my internet goes down" think about those times. How often is it really down for over 24 hours?
there are more offline gamers then online how would ypu like to buy something to have fun with it and not have internet just to see you paid $500 on nothing. Microsoft is trying to control our hole gaming life but not letting us say F S H C or we will auto get banned we half to have 247 internet to play the POS. its just BS I wish the 360 team made the "1" hell they cant even name it right. Xbox 1(original)Xbox 360 then it should of been Xbox 720 but nope. whats it gonna be in a few years Xbox 43?
I could barely understand half of that... Next time take your time and proofread before posting. What I did understand though is the part where you said someone would spend $500 and find out they can't play it because they don't have internet. If that actually happened then that said person deserves it for not researching what he or she is buying.

Yes, and that is why there are 2 alternatives, the Xbox 360 and the PS4, Like MS Said.
And that's what makes that the stupidest quote this decade and one of the reasons he got handed his P45. He spoke for himself NOT MS. Good riddance to bad trash.
