Xbox One no longer requires plugged-in Kinect, Whitten says

Xbox One does not need the Kinect sensor in order to function normally, Xbox Corporate VP Marc Whitten tells IGN. This runs contrary to previous statements: In May, Microsoft Studios Corporate VP Phil Spencer said the Xbox One would require the Kinect to be plugged in.

It's unclear whether this is a shift in policy or phrasing, but Whitten says that while ditching Kinect may limit the console's capabilities, the sensor isn't a necessary piece of equipment at all times. Instead, you'll only need it for voice- and motion-based navigation features, or to play games like Fantasia: Music Evolved, which rely on the sensor.

"Games use Kinect in a variety of amazing ways, from adding voice to control your squad mates, to adding lean and other simple controls beyond the controller, to full immersive gameplay," he says. "That said, like online, the console will still function if Kinect isn't plugged in, although you won't be able to use any feature or experience that explicitly uses the sensor."

Clean out some extra space on the entertainment center or in the closet: it depends on what you play.

It isn't essential but it's still a core part on the Xbox One experience, i understand where they are going with this


i can understand where they're going with it too. it's just the fact that im paying more money for something thats NOT required anymore and something i NEVER plan on using.

Many people are saying that they "Hate Kinect" referring to the Xbox 360 Kinect, this is the Xbox One. I wouldn't be surprised if this one is much better than the last (which was a failure)


was it really that big of a failure? or is it just that ppl dont like to actually be active with gaming. i only played the kinect a few times and i thought it was a blast. easily trumps the wii motion sensor.


Yes everyone is pretty much basing their opinion off the first one which was average i will agree. The new one however is better is every way. I'm pretty sure hospitals don't have the abilities that the kinect 2 has. People need to read about it and then they will understand that it will improve their experience massively. This is a minor issue cleared up because we have the paranoid individuals thinking that everyone is interested in watching them. Greco the first is pretty poor you have to agree, the camera and mic are just not up to the level they should be but how do people think innovation is made? just over night or through trial and error and experimentation.

i completely agree. there wasnt any problem with it being on. who gives a shit in all honesty. you just get the anti-xbox ppl saying that they are just spying on you. well, what are they gonna spy on me for? what will they gain out of it?nothing..
